The Base and the Expression: What CrossFit Teaches Us About Scripture

Every athlete eventually asks the same question: what sport is actually right for me? But before that question can be answered well, something else has to be built first — a base.

The Physical Base

In strength and conditioning, we call this GPP — General Physical Preparedness. It's not soccer-specific, basketball-specific, or ArmorBall-specific. It's the broad foundation of strength, conditioning, mobility, and work capacity that makes every specific sport possible at a higher level. This is what CrossFit is built to provide. It's not the destination — it's the base everything else stands on.

Once that base exists, a player layers SPP — Specific Physical Preparedness — on top of it. The footwork, the sport-specific conditioning, the technical skill that only applies to this game, on this field, in this position. The base doesn't compete with the sport. It empowers it. A player with a strong GPP foundation and weak SPP will still struggle in games. A player with no GPP foundation will get exposed no matter how sharp their technical skill is. You need both — but they're not the same thing, and they don't come in the same order.

The Spiritual Base

Scripture works the same way in a life.

"Discipline your body like an athlete, training it to do what it should." — 1 Corinthians 9:27

Just as GPP is the base every sport is built on top of, a life rooted in Scripture is the base every pursuit — career, relationships, parenting, competition — is meant to be built on top of. It's not sport-specific, job-specific, or even soccer-specific. It's the broad foundation of character, discipline, identity, and truth that makes every specific calling possible at a higher level.

"Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us." — Hebrews 12:1

Notice — the race is set before us. It's specific. It's individual. But the endurance to run it comes from something built before the race even starts.

Finding Your Specific Expression

Here's where it gets personal. Just as no two athletes have the same physical profile — some are built for endurance, some for explosive power, some for contact, some for finesse — no two believers are wired with the same gifts, passions, or calling.

"We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us." — Romans 12:6

"The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts... so it is with Christ." — 1 Corinthians 12:12

A center back and a striker both need the same physical base — but they express it completely differently on the field, because they're built for different roles. The same is true spiritually. Two people can share the exact same spiritual foundation and still be called toward completely different expressions of it — one through coaching, one through business, one through art, one through sport.

"We are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." — Ephesians 2:10

That verse is the SPP of the soul. The base was already laid. The specific work — the specific expression — was prepared in advance, individually, for you.

Why This Matters for How We Train

This is exactly why Full Armor is built the way it is. CrossFit is the GPP — the base. Full Armor Soccer, ArmorBall, and every other specific pursuit are the SPP — the expression. Neither one replaces the other. The base makes the expression stronger; the expression gives the base a purpose and a direction to run toward.

The same is true spiritually. Scripture isn't competing with your sport, your career, or your calling — it's the base that makes pursuing any of them, at full strength, actually possible. And once that base is in place, the real work is discovering the specific expression you were built for — the position on the field, and the position in life, that God prepared for you in advance.

Build the base. Find your expression. Run the race that's set before you.
